40 and a bit kms along the highway and then 20 kms in to the falls. There hadn't been any wind for a couple of days, but we woke to a strong tailwind.
Because we had been out late at the movies it was a late rise, followed by a slow pack and an equally slow breakfast. We left the park around 10:00 and headed back to the Finch for a coffee. Finally on the road around 11:00.
As seems to be the case now the hammer went down early and the 40 kms to the Edith Falls turnoff came up in quick time.
The ride in to the falls seemed a lot slower. The road was very undulating and heading east meant we rode into the wind. Nevertheless I didn't mind the ride. There wouldn't have been the strength or the will for this detour off the highway earlier in the ride. At this late stage of the journey with weeks of hardening I didn't find it a problem.
We stoped at one point and I asked Pierre how far he thought we'd come. He thought 10 kms. We set off and soon reached the camping areas. We must have done more like 16 or 17 kms. Again, even though it didn't seem like it, we moved along at a reasonable pace.
The falls are quite small, but they fall into a large lagoon. It is a couple of hundred metres wide and long. Nice to see so much water. The most we have seen since leaving Pt Augusta.
The caravan park is big, without power, but still popular. There is a small kiosk, the building for which is a large shipping container. The old kiosk had been washed away by a flood a couple of years ago. The woman running the kiosk had only been doing so for a couple of weeks. The kiosk meant there were a few luxuries available; fresh white bread sandwiches and ice cream. The kiosk staff also manage the caravan park. It is a beautiful setting.
We set up camp and then went for a swim. The water was cold. Pierre and I swam the 150-200 metres across the lagoon to the falls. Enjoying swimming. Enjoying being so fit.
Had tea before dark. over by 7:00. With the caravan park in darkness there was nothing to do so it was into the tent to wait for sleep.
,,,go to day 37 - June15
