With there being no caravan park in Wilmington we decided to lash out and stay in the pub. One room for the three of us. Ate there last night and shared a table with another Heysen Trail walker. This time a bloke who was travelling north to south. He was planning to walk the trail from start to finish in May; that is, in 30 days. He didn't like his chances as the rough ground was slowing progress.

The ride from Wilmington to Pt Augusta was a short 45km or so, but it included climbing the range. We didn't know what to expect of the climb and a local we talked to before setting out thought it would be tough. As it turned out the ride over Horricks Pass was lovely. An unexpected pleasure. The view from the top is spectacular and the rapid ride down the other side was a reminder of how much fun recumbent trikes can be.

We made Pt Augusta by lunchtime, but not before a puncture on the causeway in to town where we discovered Pierre had a broken spoke in his back wheel. A couple of hours were spent locating a bike shop where a repair could be made. We found these guys and, there being no suitable spoke on the shelf, Campbell fashioned a couple on the spot.

After sorting out the trike it was off to find a caravan park and then to buy supplies to get us to our next major destination, Coober Pedy. We were to hit the Stuart Highway, which seemed like a watershed moment. Into the interior. No more towns every night.

...go to day 6 - May 15
