The first night was cold and we woke to find everything heavy with dew. We ate breakfast in the caravan park and headed off through Gawler to Clare. It was a cool, sunny day and the only annoyance was more punctures. Along the way we spotted the Rattler Trail from the main road and decided to use it. It is a pleasant ride, but there had been a lot of rain making the surface, which appeared to have been recently resurfaced, soft and occasionally rutted. Being a spare 20in tube down we went in search of a spare when we got to Auburn, which is at the northern end of the Rattler Trail. Yes there is a bike shop in Auburn the primary purpose of which is to supply hire bikes to tourists. No luck finding a tube, but the advice in the bike shop was not to use the Riesling Trail as it was infested with 3 corner jacks. The advice was taken. The last 20-25kms was completed using the main road. We reached the Clare Caravan park just after 5:00. It had been a long day. The caravan park is about 3kms out of Clare and it was decided that we wouldn't go into town for a meal. We bought some bits and pieces from the caravan park reception office - a loaf of bread, a can of baked beans, some pasta, milk and assorted small boxes of cereal - and set off to put up the tents. After shower and meal made from what we were able to glean from the office it was off to bed.
...go to day 3 - May 12
