Mostly it was hot with a head wind. The day started early, around 5:00 a.m., riding for four hours or so, then find some shade and wait until it got bearable to ride again. This was usually mid to late afternoon. Then another four to six hours riiding, hopefully ending the day at a caravan park.
One day, with the longest Adelaide November heat wave approaching, with Pierre having reached Yalata, a truckie offered him a lift. "You can wait a week for it to cool down a bit and the wind to stop blowing or you can put your bike on the truck and come with me. Up to you, but I don't reckon you can make it through this section." It was a kind offer. Pierre thought about it for a bit and concluded it was a sensible assessment of the situation. The truckie took him 140 ks or so down the road. The only other break from riding was a rest day. All up 15 days riding averaging 130 kms a day.
